What is Reasonable Suspicion Testing?

Reasonable suspicion testing is a type of drug and alcohol testing that is conducted when there is a reasonable basis to believe that an employee is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This type of testing is conducted in accordance with DOT regulations and is intended to promote workplace safety and protect the public.

When Should Reasonable Suspicion Testing be Conducted?

Reasonable suspicion testing should be conducted when a supervisor or manager has observed specific, contemporaneous physical, behavioral, or performance indicators of drug or alcohol use. This may include, but is not limited to, signs of impaired coordination, speech, or attention, an odor of alcohol, and changes in mood or behavior.

How to Identify Signs of Drug and Alcohol Use:

There are a number of physical, behavioral, and performance indicators that can indicate drug or alcohol use. Some common signs include:

• Physical indicators: bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils, unsteady gait
• Behavioral indicators: changes in mood or behavior, increased absenteeism, increased accidents or near misses
• Performance indicators: decreased productivity, decreased attention to detail, increased errors or mistakes

It is important to note that these indicators can also be caused by other factors such as medical conditions or lack of sleep, and should not be relied upon solely to make a determination of drug or alcohol use.

Training Resources:

All CDL Supervisors are required to complete a U.S. DOT certified training which will equip them with training resources to help supervisors and managers identify signs of drug and alcohol use and determine when reasonable suspicion testing should be conducted. These resources include online training course, videos and training materials.
